Homecoming 2008

Homecoming 2008 is scheduled for Oct. 8 – 25. There is plenty to see and do! Run for a spot on Homecoming Court, make a float or create a display board to show off your SFA spirit, and then participate in more than two dozen activities that will make Homecoming 2008 an unforgettable event! Attend Lumberjack Bash and meet alumni from years past, cheer on the Jacks at the Torchlight Parade and Bonfire, enjoy the Homecoming parade through downtown Nacogdoches, and attend the game on Saturday to complete your weekend. The fun starts here!

This year we will offer T-shirts for sale in the SFA ticket Office and SFA Barnes & Noble bookstore for $10. For years, SFA has welcomed alumni, friends, parents and students with an annual Homecoming celebration. Don’t be left out – Be a part of the tradition!

“I Love the ’80s,” this year’s theme, has been developed as a celebration of SFA’s 80th Homecoming, as well as the 85th anniversary of SFA, which first held classes in 1923. Our theme is reflective of our readiness to celebrate all of the many projects coming to light here at SFA. Millions of dollars have been spent to build a campus that will take SFA well into the future and provide a cutting-edge education for generations to come. We invite alumni, students and family to come to campus, see the great things going on at SFA, and celebrate 80 years of great Homecoming memories – Here at SFA, we “love the ’80s!”

2008 Schedule of Events

HOMECOMING COMPETITION

The Traditions Council recognizes and rewards student organizations that show a tremendous amount of school spirit and drive. Organizations are awarded points based on their participation in the various events held throughout the week leading up to Homecoming and the week of Homecoming. Candidates running for Homecoming Court receive the points their organization earns from each event, which will be added to their total vote count.

The events are as follows:

Points are tabulated per event. Participants must report to the points table for each event and identify themselves as a member or supporter of the organization they are representing.  Participants may only represent one organization per event, and may not change organizations once an event has started.

Competition and event points will be added to the Homecoming Court Candidate’s vote total to determine the winner. All decisions regarding the awarding of points are determined by the Assistant Director of Student Life and are final. Please refer to the individual event information for details on how to participate.

HOMECOMING PARADE REGULATIONS

Floats should line up on Mound Street, in front of T.J. Rusk Middle School, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. One representative of your float will need to check in with the FLOAT PARADE MARSHALS, and your FLOAT must be in place no later than 9:15 a.m. Judges will begin inspecting floats at 9:20 a.m. ALL OTHER ENTRIES must be in place by 9:45 a.m.

The only assigned parade positions are for the Court, special guests and dignitaries. No other assignments will be made. All entries are lined up in a first-come, first-serve order. All horses will be stationed at the back of the parade, unless a clean-up crew travels with the team.

All floats and non-band entries will be placed in the parade at the discretion of the parade marshals.

ABSOLUTELY NO CANDY OR PRIZE THROWING OR HANDING OUT BALLOONS is allowed from any parade entry. The possibility of children rushing into the street around parade vehicles poses too great a danger! Please cooperate with us on this issue!

NO ALCOHOL WILL BE TOLERATED.

A maximum of 20 people are allowed on each float.

A distance of 30 feet should be maintained between each unit.

There will be NO stopping for photographers. This impedes the flow of the parade. Instructions from parade marshals must be complied with at all times.

The parade will start at precisely 10 a.m. The parade route goes west on Hospital Street to East Pecan Street; east on Main Street to Walker’s, where the bands march back to T.J. Rusk Middle School.

Floats and cars proceed on Main Street to University Drive; then north on University to William R. Johnson Coliseum parking lot (commuter lot) to disassemble. Please enter the parking lot at the north end and have your float disassembled by 1 p.m. Floats may not be left overnight.

Winning Organizations must pick up their awards and sign for their cash voucher award in the Office of Student Life (Third Floor, BPSC) on Monday, Nov. 3.

Political candidate promotions are prohibited unless sponsored by a registered SFA student organization.
