Goals
The objective of the School of Honors is to promote the intellectual curiosity of the University's most capable students, enabling them to confront complex issues. To accomplish this objective, the program offers small classes specifically designed to develop critical thinking skills, to expand the scope of investigation of a topic, and to explore issues in greater depth than can be done in conventional classes. The program also features interdisciplinary courses that encourage students to make connections among diverse areas of learning. Finally, the Honors Program endeavors to develop students who are prepared to become active and thoughtful members of the University community by involving faculty working together with honors students on challenging topics.
Who is eligible to join?
There are two ways to gain admission to the Honors Program. The first involves scores on either the SAT (1220 or above), or the ACT (27 or above). Your rank in class (top 15%) and your high school GPA may also be considered if you fall slightly below these totals. (If you are applying as a freshman, we prefer that you have at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.) The second way, if you do not meet these criteria, or if you are a transfer or returning student to SFASU, is to apply for admission to the Honors Program for one probationary semester. If after this probationary period you meet the regular requirements for the Honors Program (a 3.0 GPA in Honors courses and a 3.25 overall GPA), you will be admitted as a full member into the Honors Program. The School of Honors also actively recruits on the SFA campus among students of all ranks with a GPA of 3.25 or higher.
