What do we do?
We help communities maintain safe and healthy environments for their citizens.
We teach skills that motivate populations to foster behaviors that lead
to optimal health. Our ultimate professional mission is to prevent premature
mortality and unnecessary disease. The need for increasing the numbers
of school and community health professionals far into the next decade has

Community Health:
For students planning to conduct health education and health promotion in
a non-classroom setting, the curriculum includes advanced concepts in consumer
health, environmental health, chemical dependency, human sexuality, and
evaluation and administration of health programs. Students will complete
a field experience in a public/ community health agency. This undergraduate
non-teaching degree consists of 36 hours in Health Science, 18 of which
are advanced, a minor, and 21 hours from supportive areas. Students pursuing
Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy may major in Community Health
and minor in either psychology or biology in order to acquire the need

Health Education All-Level Certification:
For those planning to teach in schools, the curriculum for health education
in secondary schools includes, among other courses, principles and foundations
of health education, first aid and safety, social/sexual health, and drug
prevention education. The faculty provides students with the tools for
teaching through both content and methods-and-materials courses. Students
also will complete the James I. Perkins College of Education professional education requirements
and a minor. The teaching field in Health Science consists of 30 hours,
18 of which must be advanced. View the degree plan here
Health Science Minor:
A minor in Health Science requires 18 hours in the Health Science area, 6
of which must be advanced.
Certifications and Endorsements:
Certification in standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation are
provided in the Health Science program as well as the opportunity to receive
a Driver Education certification endorsement.
Scholarships and Awards:
THE ALVERA GRIFFIN HEALTH EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP was founded by Dr. Griffin
in 1979. To be eligible for this scholarship the student must be a junior
or senior Health Science major or minor.
THE DOROTHY ALLEN HEALTH EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a
Health Science major or student selecting Health Science as a second teaching
field. It was established in 1990.
